GWERU City Council is owed over ZiG400 million by debtors, an increase of over ZiG200 million in a space of three months from ZiG240 million as at the end of August.
Speaking at an ordinary council meeting on Tuesday, mayor Martin Chivhoko said the debtors had been increasing in recent months.
“We have witnessed a surge in our debtors bill from ZiG240 002 167 as at August 31, 2024 to ZiG440 858 804 as at November 30, 2024,” Chivhoko said.
“Since the devaluation of the local currency on September 27, 2024, our billing has increased from ZiG50 494 841 recorded in August 2024 to the current ZiG75 969 924 for November 2024.”
He said defaulters were last month issued with summons before appealing to councillors to urge residents to pay their bills to avoid attachment of their property.
Chivhoko said council owed a number of creditors, with Zesa topping the list.
“Our creditors have also increased from the September 2024 figure of ZiG86 118 384 to ZiG102 235 243 as at the end of October 2024, with the ZETDC [Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company] bill accounting for 58% at ZiG59 334 340,” he said.
The city boss, however, said revenue collections had shown improvement in local currency from ZiG37 295 042 in October to ZiG41 016 163 in November.
