Man burns hut in US$3 debt dispute

A MAN from Hope Fountain in Bulawayo allegedly burnt down a hut while its female owner was inside following a dispute over US$3, a magistrates’ court has heard.

Bhekinkosi Moyo (20) appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga recently to answer to a charge of arson.

Moyo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody to September 26 this year.

The court was told that on July 17 this year, Moyo was at Douglasdale Shop 1 where he met Juliet Khumalo and told her that he was selling chickens for US$4.

Khumalo reportedly told Moyo that she had US$1 on her and the accused accepted it on the understanding that he would be paid the remainder later.

Moyo reportedly went with Khumalo to his house and gave her a chicken.

The prosecution alleged that when they got to Khumalo’s home, Moyo allegedly proposed having sex with her if she did not have the US$3.

Khumalo turned down his proposal and got into her hut to sleep, leaving Moyo outside.

Moyo allegedly set Khumalo’s house on fire and it was gutted along with her personal belongings.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Moyo’s arrest.

The value of the damaged property is US$276.
