Environmentalist bemoans massive deforestation

The Matabeleland-based Africa Carbon Forum has expressed concern over the wanton cutting down of trees and irresponsible mining activities in the region.

The organisation says this has worsened the harsh impacts of climate change.

The company's founder, Anglistone Sibanda, said they had now partnered the government in implementing strategies meant to address negative effects of climate change.

Sibanda said they sought to raise public awareness to increase local participation and build capacity on green house gas emissions reduction.

"This is meant to enable Zimbabwe to achieve its nationally determined contribution targets of 40% emissions reduction per capita by 2030 and the global goal of keeping the temperature rise below 2°C and return to the pre-industrialisation era of carbon neutrality by 2050," Sibanda said.

Sibanda said Zimbabwe was bearing the brunt of climate change because of weak coping, adaptation and resilience strategies.
