THE Zimbabwe Community in South Africa has condemned the brutal attack on a Zimbabwean national at Cedar Square in Johannesburg as agitated South Africans intensify a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Several migrants have been physically assaulted, with some left nursing serious injuries.

A Zimbabwean national was left for dead on Saturday after being attacked by a team that claimed to from the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Community in South Africa chairperson Ngqabutho Mabhena said they strongly condemned the attacks.

“This incident is deeply troubling, especially as it marks the third occurrence of such violent acts by so-called officials when demanding documentation from migrants,” Mabhena said.

“While we acknowledge the legitimate role of authorities in requesting documentation from migrants to ensure legal compliance, we must emphasise unequivocally that it is against the law to resort to violence.

“The brutal assault on our compatriot, which led to near fatal injuries, is a clear violation of human rights and the principles of justice.”

Mabhena urged the relevant authorities to urgently address the issue.

“We also call on all human rights defenders, civil society organisations and the broader public to condemn these vile acts,” he said.

“It is imperative that such unlawful behaviour be swiftly addressed and eradicated to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or immigration status.”

Migrants have been subjected to xenophobic attacks by pressure groups in South Africa, which claim that foreigners are taking away their employment opportunities, leaving them wallowing in poverty.
