COWDRAY Park councillor Nkosinathi Hove-Mpofu has said residents in his area are mulling to engage a private company to service their Blair toilets in the wake of council’s failure to do so, with most of them already filling up, posing a health crisis.
Most of the residents in Cowdray Park still use Blair toilets, with council expected to empty them using vacuum tankers.
Hove-Mpofu said the area was not fully serviced hence the use of Blair toilets which were almost full.
“The residents have planned to pay a private company as they do not have confidence in the city council’s service delivery,” Hove-Mpofu said.
“In the last meeting with council, I advised them to engage the private company so that it can service the area and the citizens have better living conditions.”
She added that residents were even prepared to pay the private company for the services.
“Council bemoaned lack of funds to service the area. It said it is looking for a donor to fund the process,” Hove-Mpofu said.
The use of Blair toilets in urban areas poses a major health risk, considering that during the rainy season, they fill up with water and contaminate nearby water bodies, particularly wells.
