RESIDENTS of Mzilikazi high-density suburb in Bulawayo have expressed outrage over frequent fire bursts from sparks caused by exposed electricity cables, saying these were putting their lives in danger.
The residents told Southern Eye that the bursts had become so frequent that not a day passes without one incident.
They said a number of houses opposite Barbourfields Police Post in the “L” square area had been experiencing the bursts regularly.
“The continuous electricity line sparks started after the soccer match between Highlanders and Dynamos last year, which was marred by violence when the two teams’ supporters clashed,” they said.
The residents also bemoaned the loss of electricity caused by the cable sparks since that day last year.
“We believe someone tampered with the electricity cables. We experienced another one [cable sparks] last week and barely a week passes before another happens,” the residents said.
They also revealed that efforts to restore a stable power supply in Mzilikazi had been in vain as the frequency in electricity sparks and bursts was increasing.
The residents called for authorities to fix any cables that could have been tampered with before a fatality is recorded.
