AUTHORITIES in Matabeleland North province have stepped up efforts to ensure that villagers in Binga get set top boxes to improve radio and television reception in the district.
Traditional leaders in Binga district, Matabeleland North, were allocated set top boxes to improve radio signal amid high demand for the gadgets in the entire community.
Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Richard Moyo revealed the development although reports indicate that there is lack of radio and television signals in the district.
Moyo told Southern Eye that most people did not get the set top boxes.
“The set top boxes were only given to chiefs when they were launched in 2022. The rest did not get them because the government only brought a few for the launch,” Moyo said.
He said the reason could have been that there was a community radio station that covers the district.
“There is now Chasumpuka radio station in Binga. I think that must have been the reason why the government laid back. We are definitely pushing that it disburses the rest of the set top boxes so that people get television signal,” he said.
Moyo said information blackout had persisted despite the government promising to disburse three million decoders.

Last week, Chief Sikalenge said they had no signals, adding that this year was the 44th without signals in Binga.
He questioned how the government expected them to get informed without any frequencies in their area and how they are expected to express their grievances or air out their views when they are far behind.
In 2022, then Information deputy minister Kindness Paradza revealed that the government would for the first time in 42 years connect Binga to local television and radio.
