‘Let’s partner private sector on community halls’

BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) should engage the private sector to rehabilitate and build more community halls and recreational centres since council is facing financial challenges.

The call was made by BCC councillors recently arguing that community facilities were important to society.

Ward 6 councillor Nkosinathi Hove Mpofu said council should court private sector partners willing to assist in building community facilities.

“Why don’t we look for partnership with private stakeholders, private stakeholders willing to partner the council so that each community can have functioning facilities,” Mpofu said.

“The problem is that ... some communities ... totally don’t have community halls or recreational centres, which is not good for the community.”

Mpofu added that engaging private developers would ensure that council saves funds for other critical projects.

Ward 22 councillor Bruce Mmeli Moyo recently expressed concern over the dilapidated state of the city’s recreational centres and community halls which he said were critical in helping curb such vices as drug and substance abuse.

“Youths have been requesting recreational centres and places where they can practise their arts and culture or sport freely,” he said.

“If possible, youths should be allocated a day they are free to practise their arts and culture or sports skills because Bulawayo has a number of talented artists.”
