WORKERS at the Chinese coke producing company South Mining (Private) Limited in Hwange have accused their employer of exploiting them among other unfair labour practices.
It emerged that the workers have gone for several months without salaries.
Solidarity Mine Workers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general, Prince Mpala, accused the company management of causing the arrest of its employees whenever they demand their dues.
“Just last week, 17 employees were taken to ZRP Hwange when they approached the human resources department asking their salaries,” Mpala said.
“Most of the employees who leave work through termination are not paid their terminal benefits. This must stop. We cannot allow modern-day slavery to continue.”
Contacted for comment South Mining (Pvt) Limited human resources manager Kudakwashe Mutunja said he was in a mine.
“I am in a mine,” Mutunja said.
He did not respond to questions sent to him despite promises to do so.
