A Gokwe woman who lives in South Africa allegedly got into a deal to sell her baby to a fellow Zimbabwean woman in that country and arranging that the buyer smuggles the child back home.
The two had met on the social media platform, Facebook where they allegedly discussed and agreed to trade the child for money.
Unfortunately for the duo, the buyer, Janet Marimo was arrested after presenting herself to friends and relatives with a child whose pregnancy no one had ever seen.
Upon her arrest, the child was handed over to the department of social welfare in Zimbabwe.
The baby’s mother Pauline Maganga who had remained in South Africa got wind of what had transpired and travelled to Gokwe where she was immediately arrested after lying to relatives that her child had died in South Africa.
Maganga (23) of Chief Nenyunga appeared before magistrate Donald Ndirowei for the offence and was remanded in custody to December 20 for bail application.
Prosecutors said Maganga, then pregnant, went to South Africa in January to seek employment. She gave birth to a baby boy in June.
She allegedly conspired with Marimo whom she met on Facebook to traffic the infant to Harare.
