The government has expressed concern over the vandalism of the Plumtree-Bulawayo highway fence.
The highway fencing was funded by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) to prevent livestock from straying onto the highway.
However, driving on the highway especially at night has become a nightmare with livestock straying into the road causing accidents.
Transport and Infrastructure Development deputy minister Joshua Sacco said villagers who allow their cattle to stray onto the country's highways leading to road accidents will be held responsible.
“Fencing has been tried before and I think it should be tried again,” Sacco said at a TSCZ event in Bulawayo last week.
“Owners of livestock should be responsible and keep their livestock safe.
“They should keep their livestock in pans at night to reduce accidents or they would be held responsible.” In most cases, owners of stray cattle that cause accidents are reluctant to come forward and claim ownership of the livestock for fear of prosecution.
