Byo at risk of waterborne diseases

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) chairperson Ambrose Sibindi said residents were relying on unsafe water sources.

BULAWAYO residents are complaining about the worsening water challenges in the city where a number of suburbs have gone for over a week without the precious liquid.

On Wednesday, Southern Eye reported that there is a diarrhoea scare in Pumula South suburb as a result of water shortages.

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) chairperson Ambrose Sibindi said residents were relying on unsafe water sources.

“We are aware that we are in a water shedding period, that water should be shedded for 72 hours. Unfortunately, in some parts of the suburbs like Pumula South, Pumula East and Nkulumane they go for more than a week without water,” Sibindi said.

In a recent notice to residents, town clerk Christopher Dube said council was bringing in water bowsers to stabilise the situation and prevent disease outbreaks.

However, Sibindi said residents ended up resorting to unsafe sources when the water situation reaches crisis level.

“If water shedding goes beyond 72 hours to more than a week in some cases, residents tend to get agitated and they are forced to resort to other sources of water which proves to be dangerous because borehole water is not safe and people are hesitant to use borehole water for consumption,” he said..

Sibindi appealed to the recently sworn-in councillors to come up with effective ways to alleviate the water challenges.
