OUTGOING Gweru Urban MP Brian Dube (MDC-T) has said the electorate should not expect miracles in their communities after voting for incompetent candidates in the upcoming general election.
Addressing a Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) meeting yesterday, Dube urged the electorate to guard against being hoodwinked by freebies doled out by candidates in the run-up to the August 23 poll.
“Let us be frank with each other, it is folly for the electorate to expect miracles when they have chosen incompetent political leaders,” Dube said.
“People usually know the choices they make when they vote. But after making the wrong choices, they want to cry foul afterwards.
“If you choose to vote for beer or a packet of rice, that is what you should expect. There is no way, therefore, you can expect development in your communities after voting for freebies.”
Dube said as the country geared for the general elections, the electorate should watch out for flight-by-night politicians only concerned with lining their pockets at the expense of service delivery.
“Our biggest challenge is that people love politics more than their communities and development,” he said.
“The MPs and councillors we choose perform within their five-year term. So as we make choices we should prioritise what is important in our lives. Usually the level of development in a community comes with the mentality of that community, that is to say the community should be ready and determined to embrace development.”

Speaking at the same meeting, GRRA programmes officer Fadzai Kanyai urged people to set aside their political affiliations and vote for politicians who can deliver.
“As citizens we should move away from partisan politics to development-oriented politics,” she said.
“Let us choose representatives with capabilities."
Over the years Zimbabweans have been known to vote along political lines despite the calibre of the chosen politicians.
