Highway robbers axe, rob truck driver at detour

HARARE, March 11, (NewsDayLive) - A cross-border truck driver was struck by a machete and robbed at a treacherous detour that has taken ages to complete between Rutenga and Ngundu on the highway from Beitbridge to Harare.

Apparently, that stretch of the road was declared complete by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2024.

The driver from Mother Truckers, only identified as a Swazi national, had 20 centimetre sutures administered on him at Beitbridge Rural District Hospital.

Details of the attack were still sketchy last night, but the driver was said to have lost his mobile phone, motor vehicle repair tools, and personal belongings during the attack.

After the robbers' departure, he reportedly drove to a clinic in Rutenga where he received primary health care before proceeding to Beitbridge Hospital.

Several truckers have often complained over the poor state of some of the detours on that route.
