Late minister’s son in US$1 million project theft storm

Court hammer

HARARE, March 11 (NewsDay Live) –The son of  late minister Joel Biggie Matiza has been taken to court by trustees of an agro-forestry project after he allegedly tried to steal it in order to prop up his political career.

Bastirai Joel Matiza had allegedly been appointed an ambassador for the Green Rebirth Trust Jiri raMambo project whose net value is estimated at US$1 million.

The trustees, represented by Nadia Vingai Mabvirakure, have filed an application for an interdict against Matiza accusing him of violating their right to utilise and benefit from the tree nursery project at Chemapango Secondary School, in Murehwa district.

In the urgent chamber application filed at the Harare High Court for a spoliatory and interdictory order, the trust cited Batsirai, Tichabaiwa Gwadu and Familia Muvhunwa as respondents.

According to the court papers, on October 11, 2023, Mabvirakure together with five other trustees registered the Green Rebirth Jiri ra Mambo agroforestry project to promote biodiversity and environmental preservation in the area.

In August of last year, Batsirai offered donation, citing his alignment with the Green Rebirth Trust's mission and the potential for reciprocal enhancement of his public image as he was eyeing public office.

The trust accepted Matiza’s donations before he allegedly took control of the project by force.
