BEITBRIDGE, March 3 (NewsDay Live) – The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra)'s Customs and Excise stationed at Beitbridge Border Post on Sunday reportedly intercepted 163 kilogrammes of marijuana valued US$32 600 being smuggled from South Africa.
The contraband was allegedly hidden in a South African-registered Hino truck.
"ZIMRA customs officials, utilizing K9 units, located the drugs hidden under blankets and plastic wrapping. The truck, driven by an unnamed South African national, had entered from South Africa and was transiting through Zimbabwe and Zambia en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)," said Zimra spokesperson Francis Chimanda in a statement released Monday.
"The matter is currently under investigation by law enforcement agencies," he said.
Zimra Commissioner-General Regina Chinamasa commended the agency's commitment to ending smuggling.
"The trafficking of illegal drugs poses a significant threat to our society. Zimra will continue to diligently safeguard our borders against drugs and illicit substances," she added.
