CHITUNGWIZA Municipality's information and communication technology committee toured the Econet Data Centre in Highlands in a bid to strengthen its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

ERP is a software solution that enables organisations to manage their essential activities, with Chitungwiza making progress towards integrating ERP into its operations.

The local authority has also merged the Local Authorities Digital System (Lads) with Sage Pastel 200 Evolution.

In an interview, the municipality’s ICT chairperson Councillor Tarisai Chikukwa said the visit was a welcome learning experience.

“We hope to work together with the diversified telecommunications group to improve our ICT systems as we journey towards our smart city vision. It is the beginning of great things to come,” he said.

ICT manager John Mapani said it was council’s goal to automate and integrate all processes and activities in Chitungwiza.

“We are thus searching for partners like Econet to do this,” he said.

Econet general manager for technology services Maria Chinomwe, who was accompanied by the organisation’s Cloud, Cyber and Data Centres general manager Farai Mutyasera, expressed readiness to work with Chitungwiza to improve its ERP.

“Entities have not had the right partners to run these systems. We are available as a business to assist you,” he said.

Chitungwiza's planned Smart City Master Plan seeks to turn the municipality into a sustainable, efficient and livable city through the use of technology and innovation.

The plan establishes a comprehensive framework for realising this goal, with an emphasis on digital infrastructure, smart governance, intelligent transportation, energy and the environment, public safety and security, economic development and quality of life.
