ED declares Mbare inferno a disaster

Government’s declaration of disaster is a critical step in mobilising resources and aid to support the affected traders.

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the recent fire at the Mbare traders market a state of disaster, a key step in mobilising resources to support the affected traders.

The declaration, made under section 27 of the Civil Protection Act [Chapter 10:06], highlights the gravity of the fire that destroyed the popular trading hub.

In a Government Gazette published yesterday, Mnangagwa said: “Following the devastating fire which destroyed Mbare traders market, a state of disaster exists on the lives of more than four thousand, six hundred and ninety-five (4 695) traders who relied on the market as their source of income.”

The fire, which occurred on October 8 this year, broke out in the early hours of the evening before rapidly consuming the densely packed stalls at the market, one of Harare's busiest and oldest trading hubs.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as traders attempted to salvage their goods while fire crews battled to contain the blaze.

Despite their efforts, the fire left a trail of destruction, reducing hundreds of stalls to ashes.

The market was a lifeline for thousands of small-scale traders with the government indicating that at 5 000 traders had lost their wares in the fire.

Government’s declaration of disaster is a critical step in mobilising resources and aid to support the affected traders.

Under the Civil Protection Act, the declaration allows for the prioritisation of recovery efforts, including financial assistance, rebuilding of infrastructure and providing alternative trading spaces.

The government has pledged to investigate the cause of the fire and take steps to prevent future tragedies.

The Mbare traders market, often referred to as the heart of Harare’s informal economy, is more than just a marketplace — it is a symbol of resilience and enterprise.
