ARMED robbers Thursday afternoon pounced on a Safeguard Security transit vehicle delivering money to Ecobank on corner Fife Street and 9th Avenue at the National Railways Building in Bulawayo’s central business district and got away with about US$4 million.
When Southern Eye visited the bank at around 3:20pm, the police were already on the scene scouring for leads that may lead to the arrest of the armed robbers.
They were also recording statements from the officials.
However, witnesses said the robbers, who were armed with pistols and assault rifles, waylaid the security guards and fired shots before seizing the cash trunks, loading them into the back of a Ford Ranger single-cab vehicle and fleeing.
“The robbers were about seven in total and they were wearing masks and armed with pistols,” one of the witnesses said.
“They attacked the security guards, shot at them, but no one was hurt.”
When contacted for a comment, Bulawayo acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said they were yet to get the details of the robbery.
