Ex-Zanu PF MP 16k fraud case deferred

Maduza (36) was being represented by Devoted Nyagano when he appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

Former Member of Parliament for Kambuzuma Tinashe Maduza, who appeared at Harare Magistrates Court for fraud involving US$16 025, was remanded in custody to today for bail application.

Maduza (36) was being represented by Devoted Nyagano when he appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi alleged that sometime in 2017, the complainant joined Four Gracelands, a co-operative where Maduza was chairperson.

The co-operative was selling residential stands in Warren Park, Harare, which measured 300 square metres at US$8 000.

It is alleged that the complainant paid a deposit of US$6 000 through Maduza for residential stand number 1652 Gracelands, Warren Park.

Maduza promised the complainant that he would provide the residential stand documents after payment of the outstanding balance of US$2 000.

Sometime last year, the complainant went to the said residential stand intending to develop it and she discovered that there were already developments taking place.

She approached Maduza who allocated her on another residential stand and demanded US$1 875 meant for labour and construction up to slab level.

On November 23, last year, the complainant was allocated stand number 1548 Gracelands, Warren Park, by Maduza after she discovered the other stand also belonged to another person.

The court heard that Maduza requested US$150 for transportation of bricks from the previous stand and the complainant complied.

The complainant later paid US$3 800 meant for corporate development.

Maduza gave the complainant a receipt for US$2 000 confirming payment of the outstanding balance for the residential stand.

On February 24, Maduza instructed the complainant to give one Chikore US$200 which was meant for the approval of a plan and she complied.

The fraud was uncovered when the complainant went to Four Gracelands Co-operative offices to verify the position of her residential stand and was told that Maduza was no longer the co-operative’s chairperson.

Court documents state that the residential stand which was recently allocated to the complainant also belonged to another person.

A police report was made leading to the arrest of Maduza and nothing was recovered.
