THE Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has declared Harare Kopje, a historic hill in the heart of the capital city, a National Monument along with 14 other sites across the country.

This is contained in Statutory Instrument (S.I) 133 of 2024.

Harare Kopje is located in the central business district.

It has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age.

The kopje was initially discovered on September 30, 1980 as a potential tourist destination

Archaeological findings indicate human habitation on the hill began from the Early Stone Age to the Late Iron Age.

The hill later became the site of Fort Salisbury, established by the British South Africa Company in 1890.

Other sites that has accumulated the same status include Somerby-Stonehurst Monument situated in Zvimba rural district council, Hurodzavasikana Liberation War Memorial Monument, Gonakudzingwa Detention Camp, Kwa VaMuzenda and Zimuto Sheet Heritage Monument, Kamungoma Massacre Monument, Herbert's Mine, Matumba Six Monument, Bulawayo Hanging Tree Monument, Matabeleland North Provincial Heroes Acre Monument, Germany Church building and Samatumbu Monument, Altena Farm Monument, Tere ReMakate National Monument, Matabeleland South (Gwanda) Provincial Heroes Acres Monument and The St Mary's Basilica Monument.
