POLICE have confirmed that eight people died while 10 others were seriously injured after a bus carrying Anglican pilgrims from Bernard Mizeki shrine in Marondera caught fire at Gandanzara in Rusape on Sunday night.

Briefing the media after speaking to the survivors at Rusape General Hospital this morning, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said forensic investigations were underway to identify some of the charred bodies.

"Ten people were admitted at Rusape General Hospital of which one has been transferred to Mutare Provincial Hospital because of the severity of the injuries.

"All in all the bus had 66 passengers and 58 managed to escape. 48 went home," Nyathi said, adding that passengers should value their safety and board buses from reputable companies.

According to one of the survivors, the engine of the bus overheated and burst into flames.
