City of Harare to name, shame debtors

The City of Harare has threatened to name and shame ratepayers with outstanding debts in a radical debt recovery strategy.

The City of Harare has threatened to name and shame ratepayers with outstanding debts in a radical debt recovery strategy.

Council is owed in excess of ZiG940 million by residents, businesses, parastatals and government departments.

Council spokesperson Stanley Gama said the money was needed to run the city’s operations and to cater for service delivery.

“We have since started issuing final demands and summons to our debtors,” Gama said.

“The summons will be served on all our debtors without fear or favour.

“The city will also embark on a name and shame exercise to encourage debtors to settle if they fail to honour their payments.”

He further said names of debtors would be posted on social media platforms and at all district offices in Harare.

Gama urged debtors to clear their bills  or risk being taken to court with the possibility of losing property like houses.

Recently, Harare mayor Jacob Mafume said the government was the biggest debtor.
