GOVERNMENT has appealed to road authorities to ensure that they remit their returns on time to allow for further disbursements of funds to cater for rehabilitation programmes across Zimbabwe.
In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Joshua Sacco during a Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) workshop held for legislators in Bulawayo last weekend, Transport and Infrastructural Development minister Felix Mhona said roads were key economic enablers as they provided access to markets and social services.
“My appeal to all road authorities is to remit their returns on time to allow for further disbursements and ensure transparency as funds should be used for the intended purpose,” Mhona said.
He applauded Zinara for organising the tour and workshop to interface with Parliament in an open and deliberative forum.
He said the gesture confirmed the importance Zinara attached to the development and maintenance of road infrastructure.
“Over the years, Zinara has been instrumental in funding the upkeep and development of our road infrastructure.
“Zinara has done exceedingly well in terms of its disbursements to our road authorities within its mandate as well as under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2,” Mhona said.
He said the resuscitation of the Department of Roads maintenance units across the districts was key to allowing internal capacitation to deal with periodic maintenance.
