Harare school chosen for global debate competition

The school’s debate team came first at the Pan African Debate and Public Speaking Competition held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, between December 1 and 2 this year.

NORTH West High School in Madokero, Harare, will next year represent Zimbabwe at the International Debate Forum set for Czech Republic in Europe.

The school’s debate team came first at the Pan African Debate and Public Speaking Competition held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, between December 1 and 2 this year.

The privately-owned school, which was formed by pensioners through a trust, also scooped other top accolades in relay speech during the public-speaking jamboree in Tanzania.

Other local schools which participated in the competition in Tanzania include Monte Cassino, Bernard Mzeki, Bradley College and Amai Mugabe High School.

Northwest High School, which accommodates only 26 students, opened its doors to learners in January this year.

School head Gordon Mafara told NewsDay that his learners’ exploits in Tanzania positioned the learning institution to fly Zimbabwe’s flag high in the Czech Republic.

“This is our first year in operation, the learners made it at the nationals to qualify and represent Zimbabwe in Tanzania at the Pan African level. This means they qualify to participate in Czech Republic for the international forum.

“We are now prepared to participate in Czech Republic. Our teams are ready. We are eager to represent Zimbabwe well. This is no mean feat as it has put Zimbabwe on the map,” Mafara said.

He added: “The talent exhibited (in Tanzania) only shows the potential the school carries for future endeavours.”

The privately-owned boarding  school was established in 2017 but started operating this year.
