A HARARE car dealer appeared in court yesterday charged with using fake rebate letters to import vehicles for resale in the country.
Conwell Tanaka Muchenje (30), who is the director of Evast Online, appeared before magistrate Donald Ndirowei who remanded him on US$300 bail.
Prosecutor Ethel Mahachi alleged that in September 2022, Muchenje approached Tida Zim Motors at number 11A Bodle Avenue, Eastlea, Harare, which is in the business of buying cars for clients through Be-Forward Japan.
After viewing the available motor vehicles online, Muchenje paid US$1 540 as deposit towards the purchase of the vehicle.
Muchenje intended to have the vehicle imported under the civil servants rebate scheme, the court heard.
It is alleged that Muchenje then connived with his co-accused Never Nyatsine, who is at large, to generate an invoice using a copy of the identity card of one Francis Mutizwa Samuriwo.
The invoice was used to apply for the importation of the vehicle under the civil servants motor vehicle rebate scheme.
Samuriwo is a former driver at the Local Government ministry.

Muchenje, working in connivance with another co-accused Shingirai Chikazhe and an officer at Zimbabwe Revenue Authority only identified as Mbada, generated a fake rebate letter dated January 2, 2022.
The vehicle was imported into the country without paying duty.
