THREE people are feared dead after a motorised boat they were travelling in capsized near Tsetse Island in Lake Kariba on Saturday.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the accident, saying the three were still missing.
The boat was reportedly carrying four people.
“One person managed to swim ashore, while three are still missing. ZimParks reaction team and police are on the ground searching for the missing trio,” Farawo said on Saturday evening.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told NewsDay that one of the missing persons identified as Nyaradzai Nyakuenda (female) had hired the boat to travel from Kariba to Gache Gache to sell her groceries.
“Search operations are still underway. It is alleged that Nyakuenda hired someone to steer the boat. The accident happened on their way when the boat was loaded with groceries. Only one managed to swim to safety,” he said.
“At the moment we only have Nyakuenda’s name. As investigations go on, we will find out what caused the boat to capsize.”
Cases of capsizing boats have risen over the years on the world’s largest man-made lake. In 2021, five people died after a boat carrying eight people capsized on its way from Nyaodza to Lake Harvest habour.
