A ZANU PF member who challenged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendancy to power following the 2017 coup yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda for trial continuation on a charge of forgery.
Sybeth Musengezi, who is accused of fraudulently acquiring a Zanu PF membership card, was represented by Nqobani Sithole and Doug Coltart.
State witness Godwills Masimirembwa, a Zanu PF Harare chairperson, told the court that Musengezi forged his address and was, therefore, not a legitimate party member.
Sithole, however, argued that Musengezi was a legitimate party member who also contested for a post in the ruling party.
The State witness said Musengezi never provided documentation that he had transferred his membership from Hatcliffe to Mt Darwin.
Sithole argued that the fact that Musengezi produced a membership card showed that he was a legitimate member.
His lawyers further argued that there were errors in the party register, a charge that Masimirembwa did not deny.
The trial continues today.
