Hurungwe council official nabbed over devolution funds

Sources revealed that the official, who was arrested on Saturday, was nabbed over some building materials for a clinic that were not delivered.

THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) has arrested an official from the Hurungwe Rural District Council (RDC) over a suspected procurement scandal involving devolution funds, NewsDay has gathered.

Sources revealed that the official, who was arrested on Saturday, was nabbed over some building materials for a clinic that were not delivered.

Zacc spokesperson Thandiwe Mlobane yesterday confirmed that they were conducting investigations at Hurungwe RDC.

“I can confirm that an arrest has been made and we are still investigating the matter,’’ she said in a written response to inquiries by the NewsDay.

Sources said the official, stationed at Sengwe Clinic, misrepresented that the building material bought using devolution funds had been delivered.

“The latest incident came to light when building material meant for Sengwe Clinic was delivered at the weekend as a cover-up. Efforts were made to deliver materials that were bought from Harare at the weekend.

“The assistant engineer delivered the materials, unfortunately, some Zacc officials were at the site after a tip-off on the scandal. They nabbed him as he was delivering the material on site,” the sources said.

The suspect spent the weekend at Magunje Police Station. Hurungwe RDC chairperson Badwell Chasara said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.
