THE Professional and General Mine Workers Union of Zimbabwe (PGMWUZ) has petitioned the National Employment Council (NEC) for the mining industry over delays in resolving labour disputes filed against several mining companies.
President of the Union Abraham Kavalanjila said more than 20 cases filed with NEC were still pending.
In a letter dated July 4, addressed to NEC, PGMWUZ secretary-general Percy Mcijo said: “May I please take this opportunity to register complaints over your office’s reluctance to render the required expected services on time. Also, the union attended hearings which have not been determined yet.
“There are more than 13 cases dating back to 2022. Also of concern is the fact that a designated agent in your office referred the union to a designated agent who is on leave for a matter brought to his attention for registration. As a union we feel short-changed.”
Kavalanjila called on the Labour ministry to intervene.
“Unions are not the ones suffering but workers. We are seeing such things happening in the mining sector.
“We don't know the problem. Mining is the biggest industry where we were supposed to have offices in each province of Zimbabwe. Something has to be done. If they are failing they better request manpower from the Labour ministry,” Kavalanjila added.
The union is yet to get a response from NEC which could not be reached for comment.
