THE Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has embarked on a voter mobilisation drive targeting mainly women to increase their participation in electoral processes.
In an interview, ZCC secretary-general Wilfred Dimingu said the exercise was necessary to amplify women’s voices in politics and increase their representation in Parliament and local governance.
“We want women to understand what it means to vote and the reason why I am saying this is because most of the time, they are the gender that is left behind when it comes to such activities. So we need more women to take part in these coming elections,” Dimingu said.
“As Zimbabwe Council of Churches, we have a campaign towards elections called ‘I pray, I vote’, where we are targeting women in the Christian community.”
He added: “We are trying to educate them about the importance of participating in electoral processes, but not only participating in the processes, but to register and even take up leadership roles.”
ZCC team adviser Tinashe Gumbo said women participation in electoral processes was important and a fulfilment of their constitutional right.
To boost their active political participation, women’s lobby groups have said there should be legislated candidate quotas and reserved seats.
