Zvishavane villagers bemoan river siltation

illegal mining activities are causing heavy siltation of their water sources.

COMMUNITIES along the Runde River under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane say illegal mining activities are causing heavy siltation of their water sources.

Chief Masunda said siltation has drastically reduced the holding capacity of some dams along the river.

"The issue of illegal mining in our community is of major concern and needs to be addressed now,” said Chief Masunda.

"This is causing siltation of our water bodies and the holding capacity of our rivers and dams have been reduced drastically.”

He said communities face acute shortages of water because of the siltation.

“Water is essential to life on our planet,” he said.

There is growing public concern about the condition of fresh water in Zimbabwe as mining activities consume water in processing ore, as well as pollute the same water sources when discharging mine effluent.
