RAMPANT vandalism of tower lights and street lights in Bulawayo has become a cause of concern for the Bulawayo City Council, which now wants more police patrols to deter the vice.
The concerns come at a time when most streetlights in the residential have stopped working, exposing residents to muggings.
According to latest council minutes , the engineering services department reported a spike in vandalism of street lighting infrastracture.
“Theft of tower light control boxes and poles have reached alarming levels. Streetlights are hit by stones thereby damaging the light bulbs,” the report read.
The department encouraged the formation of neighbourhood watch committees in order to safeguard such installations.
Alderman Monica Lubimbi said although neighbourhood watch committees were available, they did not necessarily cover the whole area at once, which exposed the uncovered areas to vandals.
“Councillor Rodney Jele suggested that council should invest in cameras and also look at the issue of using boosters installed by cellular companies for tower lights. Councillor Joyce Ndlovu said despite several requests, ward 2 streetlights had not been attended to.”
The report states that she had been continuously told that the vehicle that was supposed to be used was out of order.
