Felix Moyo, the Nust director of information and public relations, was speaking at a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) certificate award ceremony on Friday.

“This is the time when as a country, we must put more resources into research and innovation to save the country from the impending difficulties staring all of us in the face,” he said.

“Research and innovation can provide relief, turn relief to level, turn level to prosperity and turn prosperity into an epidemic of successes.”

Moyo said Bulawayo’s companies desperately needed funds to buy new machinery.

“If the money released is put into raw materials that are fed into the old machines of yesteryear, the country will try many times to revive industries without success,” he said.

Moyo said new technology would  enable entrepreneurs to gain a foothold in the market.

“For any market to be mobile and to tactfully handle and accommodate developments in research and innovation, it must understand how the technology is likely to affect them,” he added.

Moyo urged NRZ to work more closely with Nust or any other university, provided it has the expertise in the fields of technology and science.

“As Nust, we are always willing to work with partners who bring their problems to us,” he said.

“Engage us to attend to your problems. It will work out to be the least expensive option.”

Nineteen NRZ workers were awarded certificates after completing a two-week principles of management course.
