THE mother-in-law of Transport and Infrastructure Development minister Obert Mpofu, Sarah Mnkandla (92) who died last Thursday, was buried at Hope Fountain in a ceremony attended by politicians and government officials.

Mnkandla is the mother to Mpofu’s wife, former Umguza Rural District Council chairperson and current National Assembly member Sikhanyisiwe.
Speaking at the service, Mpofu described his mother-in-law as a loving and caring person.
“Both my parents have passed away. My mother passed away two years ago, she (Mnkandla) was the only surviving elder who provided counsel to us,” Mpofu said.
“If you do not have respect and do not listen to your elders, you will not go far.
“Listen, respect and do not be truant. Even during the war, if you did not listen to the commander, you would not survive.”
Mpofu said he and other sons-in-law had suffered a great loss with the passing away of Mnkandla.

“She was the mother to us all. She looked after us and gave us advice. She was the only one left and we are left poorer without her.
“She had not been feeling well for a while and at the age of 92, she always spoke about development.
“All her children are so respectful and it shows in my marriage with my wife.
“We have been together for the past 32 years and have never had any problem.”
Mpofu said his mother-in-law was from the royal Khumalo clan and the royal blood in her directed her children properly.
The service was also attended by Bulawayo Provincial Affairs minister Eunice Sandi-Moyo, officials from Air Zimbabwe, and Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe and National Railways of Zimbabwe.
Also in attendance were the Zanu PF Matabeleland North provincial chairperson Richard Moyo and Bulawayo deputy provincial chairperson Killian Sibanda, among other Zanu PF officials.
Mnkandla is survived by seven children, 40 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
