Village heads, chief smoke peace pipe

The stand-off between Chief Nyangazonke and his community runners was revealed during a meeting held in Madwaleni village in Kezi

VILLAGE heads, who were at loggerheads with Chief Nyangazonke of Matobo in Matabeleland South province over the illegal parcelling out of land in the area, say the impasse has since been resolved.

The stand-off between Chief Nyangazonke and his community runners was revealed during a meeting held in Madwaleni village in Kezi on Wednesday last week.

The village heads told Southern Eye that the differences were ironed out on Friday last week when they went to Kezi Police Station where Chief Nyangazonke said they should meet to resolve the matter.

Acting headman Mswenya Moyo said they had amicably resolved their differences at the meeting.

“There were no hard feelings ... We are now concentrating on other issues,” Moyo said.

The stand-off emerged during last week’s meeting in Kezi where Chief Nyangazonke accused some village heads of impersonation which prompted him to file a police report.

The chief’s personal advisor Artwell Sibanda said the chief asked the police to caution the village heads. He added that Chief Nyangazonke had set up a committee he chairs with an Agritex officer, councillors from respective wards, the acting headman and five other committee members to resolve land issues.

“The village heads submitted the names of intended beneficiaries and the names are vetted by the committee for onward submission to the chief who then authorises the list. The villagers identify possible places for settlement and the Arex official then pegs,” Sibanda said.
