Dj Ivernex basks in Carling Black Label DJ Clash glory

The winning DJ revealed that he started spinning the wheel at a tender age in Mutare through the influence and inspiration of his elder brother.

MUTARE-BASED Wheelspinner DJ Irvinex real name Irvine Zvikomborero Maponga has shrugged off a stiff contest from 23 other finalists, who took turns to showcase their skills on the turntables in Bulawayo at the ZITF Hall 3 on December 22.

"I didn't expect to be the winner out of all the contestants. I was using a worn out controller and was up against good DJs I respect a lot and even after winning I am employing some skills from them," he said.

"I hope this opportunity opens more doors for me and also bring forth the most needed sponsorship for me to reach greater heights. I thank Carling Black Label for this opportunity and uplifting artists such as me."

The winning DJ revealed that he started spinning the wheel at a tender age in Mutare through the influence and inspiration of his elder brother.

"I started playing when I was 10 years old after being inspired by mu elder brother. I then started playing in nightclubs when I was in grade 7. My brother would go with me and give me a short slot in the club till my mother found out and banned me from doing that.

"After my secondary school studies I then took it up and started doing it full time," he said.

The clash was launched in October with more than 250 wheel spinners registering to participate in the contest.

Eight regional DJ clashes were held in Masvingo, Mutare, Chinhoyi, Gweru, Bulawayo, Harare North, Harare South and Chitungwiza where winners from each region walked away with US$500 while the 1st runner up received USD250.

The winner DJ Ivernex went home with a sum of US$3  000 plus a Controller, Apple Mac Laptop, Studio Monitor and Cordless Mic. Second prize winner DJ Toxi Gyn walked away with US$2 000, studio monitor, and cordless Mic.
