Denis’ 90 minutes of fame: Warren Park’s ‘mbinga’ who never was

Denis Munyikwa

AT exactly 9pm on Wednesday, April 26, Michael Oliver blew the whistle to signal the kick off of a match pitting Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, at that very moment the wheel spinner at Wezhaz Sports Club in Warren Park, Harare was playing wrestler Undertaker’s theme song to signal the presence of a mbinga in the midst of football fanatics who were closely following proceedings at the Etihad Stadium on the bar television sets.

Mbinga is street lingo for a big spender.

Harare club DJs have a tendency of playing Undertaker or John Cena theme songs whenever a “mbinga” buys expensive alcohol. I find it unnecessary, annoying and irritating to halt everyone’s pleasure so that everyone’s attention is directed to a mbinga sandwiched by slay queens.

Lights Dimmed, with Undertaker’s theme song blasting from the bar speakers as two female waitresses clad in skimpy outfits walked into the VIP section holding four bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne decorated.

Even the cub’s proprietor only identified as Gudo could be seen playing waiter roles, to make sure that the big spender of the night and his hangers on are kept happy, smiling and that their tumblers don’t run dry.

The big spender of the night surprised everyone, it’s a 23-year-old, muscular young man with tinted dreadlocks clad in a Senegalese football team’s yellow kit.

He frequents Wezhaz Sports Bar but has never splashed such amounts of money to order expensive alcohol.

That night Denis Munyikwa’s pockets were fat, rather muscular like his body frame.

Like a mbinga he was, well just for 90 minutes till the football match ended, Denis didn’t dance clumsy.

His entourage including, girls in skimpy outfits, danced in all raunchy manner to entice their big spender. Surprisingly looking distressed, Denis constantly checked notifications from his new iPhone.

The party ended when Michael Oliver blew the whistle to signal the end of the match which Manchester City thumped Arsenal 4-1.

The next day news of Denis’ death through his own hands spread like wildfire. He slit his own throat using a knife at his mother’s house in Warren Park after a warrant of arrest was issued against him and raid conducted.

One of Wezhaz sports bar workers confirmed that Munyukwi spent more than USD $1000 on his last night.

“The young man was loaded; he showed us cash, crispy $100 notes. He vowed to splash the cash on expensive alcohol and he did. When I heard that he had died I suspected a robbery because he had been walking around with a lot of cash,” he said.

It’s reported Munyukwi had stolen thousands of dollars, before spending some of it in the bar and on a brand new iPhone mobile phone.
