Mechanic accused of bashing ex-wife with car jumper cables

Machona is seeking a peace order against Takawira who is allegedly always assaulting her.

A HARARE woman, Martha Machona has dragged her former husband, Leonard Takawira to court for allegedly physically assaulting her using car jumpers and baton sticks over alleged infidelity.

Takawira appeared this week before Harare magistrate Tamara Chibende facing assault charges.

Machona is seeking a peace order against Takawira who is allegedly always assaulting her.

“He beats me with jumpers, and does not allow me to talk to my relatives or see my children whenever I visit them as he accuses me of having extra marital affairs," Machona told the court.

“After chasing me away from home where we used to stay together, he did not allow me to take our four year old child with me.”

Takawira is, however, denying the allegations.

“I deny the charges. The main reason why I do not allow her to come back home is because she initially left and started living with another man. I have never assaulted her because she used to work as my receptionist. If I assault her I would be exposing myself to my clients who will see her with bruises,” Takawira said.

Takawira is instead accusing Machona of leaving their children at home while she goes to see her new lover. He claims that she leaves him to take care of the children.

"I have a girl doing Grade 4 and the four-year old child that she left. The reason why she seeks a peace order is because she thinks I will go to the place where she stays with her new man and cause trouble. I was actually shocked last Friday when she gave me papers ordering me to come to court. I asked God why I should always be hurt, because her actions cause me a lot of pain,” he said.

Chibende adjourned the matter to February 22 for ruling on whether Machona should get a peace order.
