Traditional leader and sungura musician Headman Muwi believes he has what it takes to surpass the level reached by sungura music maestro Alick Macheso.

Born Landmine Madongonda, Headman Muwi recently released his fifth album and he has a firm belief that the offering will catapult him to prominence.
The musician, who hit newspaper headlines in 2013 after suing musician Sulumani Chimbetu over a $3 000 debt after the dendera singer failed to pay for potatoes, said his six-track album, Tariro was a chart-buster pregnant with inspiring messages. Madongonda is also a potato farmer and former boxer.
One of the songs on the album, Jack, has been receiving rave reviews on national radio stations and is currently doing well on Radio Zimbabwe Coca Cola Top 20 charts.
Other tracks on the album, Mhamha Stella, Madzimai, Hondo, Chatibweke and Garikai are yet to make a mark in the music charts. The 42-year-old musician, who can best be described as a social commentator, tackles issues that affect people’s day-to-day lives such as love, betrayal and back-biting.
“I am ready for Macheso. I want to surpass him and it can be done,” he said.

“I am overwhelmed by the support I have been getting from my fans. It is quite encouraging that my music is appealing to all group ages. I believe I have improved in all departments. I made sure that my instrumentals and voice were inter-twined.”
Madongonda said musicians such as the late John Chibadura, Leonard Dembo and Marshall Munhumumwe inspired him.
“I believe I am on the right track and my aim is to reach the highest level like what Macheso did,” he said.
Madongonda proved that he was an excellent performer after putting up a scintillating show at Nyanga Country Club last month where he curtain-raised for Macheso.
“I am promising fireworks. It is an honour to perform with heavy-weights like Macheso and I am inviting people in Nyanga to come in their numbers to my shows,” he said.
