No joy for CCC 78

Jameson Timba and 77 party members have been languishing in remand prison since their arrest on June 16.

OPPOSITION CCC official Jameson Timba and 77 fellow party activists arrested in Harare nearly two weeks ago for gathering "with intent to promote violence" have been further remanded in custody to July 10 after their bail application was shot down by magistrate Ruth Moyo.

Jameson Timba and 77 party members have been languishing in remand prison since their arrest on June 16.

The magistrate said the party activists were not suitable candidates for bail and were a public security threat.

The accused persons were arrested on June 16 while commemorating the Day of the Africa Child, according to party officials.

The group is represented by Agency Gumbo, Lazurus Mbereko, Jeremiah Bamu and Webster Jiti.

Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira alleged that on June 16, police were tipped off that the accused persons were holding an unsanctioned gathering for the purposes of engaging in an unlawful demonstration in Harare.

The court heard that  there were skirmishes at the scene as the accused resisted arrest and fought back, resulting in two of them being injured.

However, the accused claimed police used brute force including tear smoke to arrest them.
