Local celebs hooked on Big Brother Mzansi

ZimCelebs founder, Uncle Munhumutapa

Big Brother Mzansi has become a captivating reality TV phenomenon, captivating audiences not only in South Africa, but across the region, including Zimbabwe.

Surprisingly, a number of Zimbabwean celebrities have confessed their addiction to the show, from A-list actors to chart-topping musicians.

ZimCelebs founder, Uncle Munhumutapa, despite his busy schedule, finds time to indulge in the drama.

“I am anticipating the return of BBM this Sunday,” he shared.

“I respect the production because it provides a platform for talented individuals to showcase their skills and gain exposure.

“It would be fantastic to have a similar platform here in Zimbabwe.”

Actor Ben Chest echoed the same sentiments, highlighting the show’s potential to inspire.

“Big Brother Mzansi is a great platform and has become a family programme that can provide role models,” he said.

“I miss Big Brother Africa, which showcased diverse cultures and backgrounds from across the continent.”

ZiFM’s Top 40 presenter, Tatenda G, emphasised the authenticity of the show.

“It’s live 24/7 for close to three months with cameras and microphones,” he said.

“There’s no way to script that level of reality. I don’t like the unrealistic elements seen in some reality shows, but Big Brother is as real as it gets.

“I have a few favorites, like Khosi who won BB Titans, and I thought Makhekhe was hilarious.

“I also admire all the Zimbabweans who have represented us well on the show.”

Television news anchor Francesca Museche also admitted to being a dedicated viewer.

“From time to time, if I am at home, I sit on the sofa and catch up,” she said.

“It’s interesting because my entire family enjoys the show, so there is no fighting over the remote when it’s time for BBM.”

The late former president Robert Mugabe’s family was known to be avid followers of the show.

Notably, he once generously gifted Munya Chidzonga, a housemate in Big Brother Africa, a staggering US$300 000.

Many felt Chidzonga had been unfairly denied the $200 000 prize money, prompting Mugabe’s generous gesture.

Some of the notable Zimbabweans who have featured in the Big Brother house include Pokello Nare, Maneta Mazhani, Rocky and Hakeem Mandaza.
