Designer turns trash into treasure

fashion designer Precious Kasongo

Bulawayo-based fashion designer Precious Kasongo Ndhlovu says she merges Afrocentric and Eurocentric aesthetics into her work.

Kasongo said part of her creativity comes from upcycling old clothes into bags and her recent love of using bottle lids and caps to create earrings.

“As a fashion designer, I merge Afrocentric and Eurocentric aesthetics into my work,” she said. “Part of my creativity comes from upcycling old clothes into bags and my recent love is using bottle lids and caps to create earrings,” she said.

“That’s something I incorporated into my collection that was meant to be showcased at Zimbabwe Fashion Week prior to the event’s cancellation.

“Basically, your trash is my treasure, and I have pieces made from tissue paper rolls, scoring iron, and offcuts from residual material.”

Kasongo explained that her work and passion are ignited by the idea of working with what one has. “My work and passion are ignited by the idea that one has to work with what they have, live within their means, and create magic from what’s around them,” she said.

The fashion designer founded her brand, Serenity, in February this year. Serenity is a unique clothing brand that goes beyond fashion. It is an innovative brand dedicated to both women and men, transcending age boundaries to cater for individuals from all walks of life. Its mission is clear; to enhance your confidence and express your unique personality through carefully curated collections.

Each piece in the Serenity line is designed with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that everyone can find something that resonates with their personal style. Serenity offers versatile options that empower you to embrace your individuality. Precious believes that fashion should not only be about looking good but also about feeling good and radiating peace with a pinch of joy. Her vision for Serenity reflects this ethos, encouraging customers to wear their confidence proudly.

“I founded my brand Serenity in February 2024, post-graduation. One has to look within themselves for work and keep the mind from being idle,” she said.

Ndhlovu shared that before she started making real clothing with fabric, she would drape herself in refuse bags/plastic to showcase her skill. “Before I started making real clothing with fabric, I would drape myself in refuse bags/plastic to showcase my skill, thus creating something from nothing and keeping the dream alive.”
