Arts conference to explore arts in mental health advocacy

The conference will centre on exploring the use of digital theatre arts and media practices in promoting good mental and physical health in Zimbabwe.

The Afriremedy Arts for Development Trust organisation will host their first edition of the Afriremedy Healing Canvas Conference-Festival, to be held on June 28 and 29 at Harare's Theatre in the Park.

The conference will centre on exploring the use of digital theatre arts and media practices in promoting good mental and physical health in Zimbabwe.

In an interview with conference- festival coordinator Ashley Rudo Jim (pictured), she said the event was inspired by the need to use arts-based methodologies in mental health advocacy," Jim said.

“Recognising the profound impact of creative expression on mental, emotional, and physical health, the Afriremedy Healing Canvas Conference seeks to bring together diverse voices, fostering collaboration and dialogue at this vital crossroads.

The Afriremedy Healing Canvas Conference stands as a testament to the growing recognition of the arts as a dynamic force in promoting wellness, resilience, and healing.”

“The conference advances conversations, fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, and promotes innovative strategies that harness the transformative power of the arts in the realm of health and wellbeing. It also seeks to shape the dialogue and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of arts and health.”

Jim said the event will feature online and physical workshops, paper presentations, and panel discussions led by artists, researchers, students, policymakers, and healthcare professionals, providing attendees with theoretical and practical experiences in using the arts for personal and community wellness.

Attendees can expect exhibitions that align with mental health and wellness. There will also be a drum cafe, which is an interactive music therapy session using mbira, drums, and other instruments. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with healthcare practitioners at the event.

Jim said the Afriremedy Arts for Development Trust is an arts-based organisation that uses media and performance arts methods to initiate, probe, and deepen pertinent dialogue around relevant concerns in Zimbabwe so as to motivate expression and participation in development processes.

The Afriremedy Arts for Development has partnered with other organisations such as Miss Deaf Pride Zimbabwe, Theatre in the Park, Medin, Medin Sight Clinic, Ndinewe Foundation, and Steamroom for the upcoming festival.
