Letter to my people : Zanu PF succession wars are back with a vengeance

Chris would not have said all those things without the backing of someone very powerful.

My Dear People

The garrulous Chris Mutsvangwa, also known as the Rambo of Zanu PF politics, threw the cat among the pigeons when he appeared to rule out the Generari from succeding Ngwena when the octogenarian finally decides to retire.

Chris, who is said to have ambitions of his own, said “Zanu PF is not a church where people can  be anointed and the president is the Pope or the Archibishop of Canterbury, who appoints priests.”

In remarks that seemed to be pointed at the Generari, he told The Standard: “If you think you are worth it, go and sell yourself to the people.

“If you clamour for anointment by the president, it means you have failed the litmus test of being a Zanu PF leader.”

Chris also denied the existence of a pact between Ngwena and the Generari that was presumably struck during that cowardly coup against Gushungo seven years ago.

Those familiar with the alleged pact say the Lacoste kingpin had agreed to serve one term and handover to the former army commander.

As expected, youthies were sent to reprimand the loud mouth, but we know the script.

Chris would not have said all those things without the backing of someone very powerful.

It is clear that knives are out for the Generari and we know that it will end in tears. It is a replay of the 2017 script.

Anyway I don’t have much sympathy for the Generari.

When the soldiers rolled the tanks to force Gushungo to resign, the Genarari was given valuable advice from the fountain of knowledge, but he chose to be disobedient.

Baba told him not to trust Ngwena. Gushungo reasoned that the Generari cannot stage a coup in order to hand over power to another person. Besides, he was dealing with a very tricky customer.

Everything has come to pass. As we know, there was no power transfer in 2023 and voluntary handover of power anytime soon does not seem likely.

I saw the Generari cutting a lone figure at the Heroes Acre last week and it was a very sad sight.

The increasingly paranoid Lacoste cabal leader recently summoned his top security chiefs to admonish them for failing to bring to book culprits behind the series of security breaches at properties belonging to his family members.

After the meeting police issued a statement with a picture of a man they said was wanted for fraud.

It turned out to be a silly move by the police as the man in the picture was a suspect that they have been hunting for several years in connection with the White City bombing.

Previously police have put out adverts looking for the same man.

At one point they claimed that he was being sought by a relative.

It has become clear that there is growing mistrust in the corridors of power and things are bound to only get worse.

I warned you to be careful when you were being fooled by the Lacoste cabal to support the soldiers to chase Gushungo out of office.

It is now clear for everyone that it was never about the people, but personal and family interests.

The violent power grab has only benefited one family and Icarus.

George Guvamatanga is one of the reasons this country is mired in economic doldrums. He is arrogant and has become an enabler of all things undesirable at Treasury.

His name has featured in the several scandals that have rocked the Finance ministry with his signature being seen in many controversial payments.

From Draxgate to the recent scandal involving Icarus and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, George’s name featured prominently. He has also been accused of being in Queen Bee’s pockets.

I was, therefore, not surprised to see him being quoted spewing bile over the latest Office of the  Auditor General report that showed serious leakages in several  ministries.

Guvamatanga took offence that the report highlighted several instances where government departments paid for cars and furniture, which were never delivered.

He said the report should have highlighted that the government’s internal audit system had picked up the anomalies and was correcting them. The arrogance knows no bounds.

Guvamatanga forgets that he is dealing with taxpayers’ money and not his tuck-shop. If he was in a country like Rwanda where integrity in the civil service matters, he would be out of his job by now.

In the so-called second repubric as long as you serve the interests of the cabal you can do as you please. You can even insult the taxpayers, who pay your salary.

For me Tendai Biti gave the best analysis of Mthuli’s purported midterm budget review, which was just a lot of hot air.

Biti said “the midterm review presented on July 25 was a vacuous, pointless, self-serving mendacious exercise.”

He noted that the review did not "attempt to deal with Zimbabwe’s multiple structural challenges that include poverty, unemployment, collapse of social services, de-industrialisation and under development."

In short, it was just dogs’ breakfast.
