Prince Matore on course to break 16-year kwekwe jinx

Soft spoken coach Matore appears to have unlocked the path to finally get a team from Kwekwe promoted, albeit in the stiff competition in the Central Region Soccer league.

FORMER Motor Action and Chicken Inn assistant coach Prince Matore is well on course to break a 16-year-long jinx as his side, Kwekwe United stare at the bright prospects of gaining Premier Soccer League promotion from the Central Region Division One league.

The now defunct Lancashire Steel were the last team from the City of Gold to play in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 2009.

They had become regulars in the topflight for over 13 years but they bowed out of big boys' league in 2009 when they finished 13th on the table.

In the then 16-team league, Lancashire Steel failed to defend their PSL status in the playoffs which were won by Chitungwiza’s Eagles.

Sixteen years later, there is a new wave of hope that Kwekwe might be able to taste premiership football once again.

Soft spoken coach Matore appears to have unlocked the path to finally get a team from Kwekwe promoted, albeit in the stiff competition in the Central Region Soccer league.

Kwekwe United have been in scintillating form this season, as they have gone toe-to-toe with seasoned campaigners, Tongogara and Chapungu.

And for the longest time, they have held onto pole position in the riveting league. After 21 rounds, they have collected 42 points.

Second-placed Tongogara, who have one game in hand have 39 points while former premiership side Chapungu are third on 35 with two games in hand.

Plausibly Matore, who took over the reins at the Kwekwe team at the beginning of the season, appears to have mastered the plot in the central region.

Nevertheless Matore has remained grounded and is playing cards close to his chest in this riveting race for promotion.

“We have to focus at each game as it comes because we can’t talk much about the championship,” said Matore.

“All these upcoming games are difficult because now we are the team to beat, it’s not going to be easy.”

Meanwhile, Sheasham have blown hot and cold, something that has seen their hopes for promotion getter slimmer by each game.
