Sables find their perfect brew

REIGNING Rugby Africa champions, the Zimbabwe Sables, celebrated their recent title with a sip of a Sable Lager at the Delta Beverages Lagers plant in Southerton, Harare.

Sable Lager is a Delta brand, which perfectly resonates with the Zimbabwe 15s rugby team, the Sables.

The event included a tour of the Delta plant, food and drinks and was meant to strengthen the bond between the team and the beer brand.

Losson Mtongwiza, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union president, expressed confidence in the team’s future success and urged Delta Beverages to prepare for future celebrations.

“Delta is the major sponsor of the Cheetahs and the Cheetahs are doing very well. We should be able to come back next year with a trophy with the Cheetahs. So, I am hoping that our brand manager is hearing that and getting ready for the celebrations for next year,” Mtongwiza said.

“The Sables are definitely on their way up. Our Africa Cup tournament coming up next year is also going to come back home. So I am going to request humbly that we prepare something bigger for next year.”

Delta Beverages general manager Lucky Nkunzane emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting rugby in Zimbabwe and highlighted the alignment between Sable Lager and the aspirations of young consumers and Sables’ journey toward greatness.

“Our commitment to growing the game of rugby in Zimbabwe runs deep, as evidenced with Delta Beverages sponsorship of the Zimbabwe national Sevens team, the Cheetahs,” Nkunzane said.

“Sable Lager has been on a similar path with the 15-man format, having been the official beverages sponsor for the Sables since the brand’s launch in 2022.

“Sable Lager is a brand that is geared towards young aspirational consumers who are on a journey to greatness. Likewise, the Sables are on a similar journey striving towards their dreams.”

The Sables lifted the Rugby Africa title after beating first-time finalists Algeria 29-3 in Kampala at the end of July to win their first title since 2012 and climbed to 28 on the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, a nine-year high.
