Golf Zone: Zim Golf promises a great All-Africa Team Championship

ZG president Martin Chikwanha was excited about the opportunity to host the continental championship again.

Zimbabwe Golf (ZG) are relishing the opportunity to stage a top international event when they host the 16 th  edition of the biannual All-Africa Golf Team Championship (AAGTC) later this year.

The AAGTC is scheduled to take place from October 27 – November 2 at Bulawayo Golf Club and will be making a return to Zimbabwe for the first time since 2017 when it was hosted at Elephant Hills Golf Club in Victoria.

Zimbabwe got the opportunity to organise the continental event after the initial hosts Seychelles surrendered the right due to disruptive weather patterns in that country.

ZG announced the new development at a press conference in Harare on Wednesday and vowed to stage a top-notch event.

A Local Organising Committee led by ZG vice president Stalin Masiya has been chosen to ensure a successful tournament.

“We are looking to stage a great tournament in Zimbabwe. Last month I had the privilege to lead our team to the Region 5 tournament in Zambia which comprised eight SADC countries. This time it will be twice the number if not more because we are looking at over 18 countries coming here. It’s not going to be an easy task but as the organizing committee we are well prepared for the challenge. I want to assure

everyone that it is going to be a great tournament,” Masiya said.

I know that being the hosts our team will also excel. This tournament is for top amateur golfers from across the continent so we are going to have our top golfer. So, we invite everyone to come on board and support us, from sponsors, media and spectators so that we can have a successful tournament,” he added.

The LOC also includes treasurer Clayton Kazembe; Michael Mahachi (technical); Ephraim Mashingaidze (marketing); Tirivashe Nheweyembwa (administration); Tino Mashapaire (fundraising) and Tendai Gwatiringa (operations).

ZG president Martin Chikwanha was excited about the opportunity to host the continental championship again.

“This year we have taken the responsibility at the last minute because the event was supposed to be hosted by Seychelles but unfortunately Seychelles experienced some disruptive weather and as we were asked to pick up the baton. We are truly honoured to host this event.

“The decision to host the event in Bulawayo must not be taken lightly. This is a calculated, well thought through desire not only to showcase diversity in the country but a conscious appreciation of Bulawayo and its cultural heritage.

“Bulawayo is the oldest golf club in the country having been established in November 1895. It is fitting that such a historic venue will host the event that brings together almost 20 countries.

“We have at our disposal an opportunity to showcase Zimbabwe's hospitality, the beauty of its people, and our status as a prime tourist destination. We are proud custodians of one of the seven wonders of the world, The Mighty Victoria Falls — the majestic Zimbabwe Ruins—the tranquility of the Eastern Highlands, and the wildlife and fauna of the Matopos. This championship gives us a platform to share these treasures with Africa as well as the world at large.

“l would like to invite the entire country to partner with ZGA in its endeavour to showcase the best of our country to the continent and the world at large. It is our hope with this event we bring together long-lasting partnerships that bring value as well as a lasting legacy for all of us, he said.

The last AAGTC event was hosted by Egypt as Morocco emerged winners.
