RISING athlete Wayne Kabondo and veteran female runner Fortunate Chidzivo won the third edition of the Post Insurance Mr Pace Half Marathon, men and women category respectively, which was held at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

Kabondo from Mr Pace Athletics Club romped home 1 hour 4 minutes and 57 seconds while Black Rhinos’ Wellington Varevi was second after clocking 1 hour 5 minutes 42 seconds.

In third place was Blessing Waison who finished the race in 1 hour 8 minutes 13 seconds.

Chidzivo won a very close race in the women's class arriving home in 1 hour 13 minutes, 12 seconds ahead of Kenyan athlete Daise Kipsufiut and Filipa Dube clocked 1 hour 15 minutes 30 seconds.

Kabondo was delighted with his win.

“I am so happy because I had said I am going to win this race and I managed to achieve that. It was a good race, the course was flat and fast and I was running against really fast guys. We ran together as a group for 18 km and after that that’s when I decided to push harder to win the race,” said the 25-year-old athlete.

Chidzivo said the race was an opportunity to test herself for other races.

“It was a tough race but by the grace of God I managed to win. I would like to thank Zimpost for sponsoring and giving us this opportunity to test ourselves for other bigger events. It’s always exciting to win because every time you train your aim is to eventually win in competitions,” she said.

This 2022 edition of the event was sponsored to the tune of US$20 000 double the prize fund from the previous edition and attracted top athletes from all of the country’s provinces.

The event is sponsored by Zimpost and its partners including Nicoz Diamond, Global Risk Underwriting Managers (Gruma), Zinara and Mr Pace Athletics Club.

As Zimpost we are excited to team up with our partners under the Post Insurance brand. We have managed to sponsor the third edition of the Post Insurance Mr Pace marathon to the tune of US$20 000. We have received a lot of athletes who have competed in the 21km marathon 10km as well as 5km. And we are excited to have the 1km race for directors and executives whom we are going to continue to invite to come to future events,” Zimpost Postmaster General Maxwell Chitendeni said.

Post Insurance Mr Pace half marathon is one of the three promotions launched by Zimpost in April along with the Post Insurance Ensure, Licence and Win as well as Post Insurance Staff promotions.

“It is the third edition of the Post Insurance Marathon. We are trying to get people to come enjoy, exercise and network so that we grow and remain fit. This year’s event is another milestone because we managed to achieve what we were trying to achieve because we have lots of athletes and lots of companies who have come to be with us. I am happy for all the winners and I think we had people participating in all the categories," GRUMA managing director Muvengwa Marumahoko said.
