Sean Williams was named player-of-the-match for his three wickets for 33 runs from nine overs in a winning cause.

TUSKERS registered their first victory of the 2023/24 Pro 50 Championship season after edging Rhinos by three runs in a match played at Queens Sports Club on Sunday.

Sean Williams was named player-of-the-match for his three wickets for 33 runs from nine overs in a winning cause.

On song batsman, Antum Naqvi, scored a 103-ball century, his second of the season albeit in a losing cause.

After batting first, Tuskers totalled 252/9 in their 50 overs buoyed by half centuries from Milton Shumba with 67 runs from 85 balls and their skipper, Brian Chari’s 63. Wicketkeeper batsman, Clive Madande, weighed in with 26 while Williams added 23 runs.

Rhinos, who were yet to taste defeat this season, were bundled out for 249 runs on the last ball of the match needing three runs to tie and four to win despite Naqvi’s heroics that saw him perish on 100 as he was run out attempting to return the strike while sensing danger of running out of partners.

All-rounder Tarisai Musakanda who has had a good start to the season fell for 31 runs together with skipper Chari. Rhinos had some good bowling performances from Simon Mugava who picked three wickets for 34 runs from his 10 overs. Neville Madziva also picked three wickets for 42 runs from seven overs.

In another match played at Mutare Sports Club, Eagles flew past the mountainous side with a thud, registering a nine-wicket victory against the hosts.

The star performers were Eagles’ opening pair of Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Nick Welch with 71 and 50 runs respectively, while Brian Bennett scored 61 for Mountaineers.

The home side batted first and laboured to 168 all out inside 35.2 overs, falling to Tapiwa Mufudza’s spin. Mufudza picked four wickets for 36 runs from 10 overs while the trio of Tanaka Chivanga, Alex Russel and Wessly Madhevere took two wickets each.

In response, Eagles reached 169/1 inside 21.2 overs.

This weekend, Rhinos hosts Eagles in a top of the table clash at Kwekwe Sports Club while Tuskers are away to Southern Rocks in Masvingo.
